The Christian does not enter the voting booth merely asking, “What benefits me?” Rather, every believer must ask questions like, 

• Which individual candidates most faithfully reflect the character of Christ? 
• Are they known to be truthful?
• Do they embrace mercy for humanity? 
• Do they embody the principles of good stewardship (socially and financially),  protections for sick, shelter and provision for the elderly and the orphan? 
• Are they concerned with the common dilemmas of  all citizens (neighbors)? 
• Do they believe government has the responsibility to care for all of this society? 

Most importantly: 

• Are they obedient to God?” 

Scripture does not command believers to vote. No candidate is Christ, no political party is the Church, and no election can change the plans that God has for this world. However, voting can be an act of Christian stewardship, but political participation should always remain subordinate to every believer’s first and primary allegiance:  Jesus Christ. 

Biblical principles can and should always guide Christians when participating in elections.

Voters, candidates and government should:

• Seek the good of the community. Jeremiah 29:7 calls God’s people to seek the welfare of the place where they live. 
• Value justice and righteousness. Micah 6:8 emphasizes doing justice, loving mercy, and walking humbly with God. 
• Respect governing authority without making government an idol. Romans 13:1–7 recognizes civil authority, while Acts 5:29 makes clear that obedience to God comes first. 
• Care about character as well as policy. Proverbs repeatedly praises integrity, truthfulness, wisdom, and justice in leadership. 
• Protect the vulnerable. Proverbs 31:8–9 calls believers to speak for those who cannot adequately speak for themselves. 
• Use discernment rather than tribal (party) loyalty. Christians should examine candidates, policies, truth claims, consequences, and character rather than assuming that any political party perfectly represents the Kingdom of God. 
• Maintain Christian conduct especially when in disagreement. Political participation should not override commands concerning love, truthfulness, humility, self-control, and treatment of neighbors.
